Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande lead the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards nominations

The Video Music Awards goes to….

On Thursday (July 30), MTV announced the long list of nominees for this year’s Video Music Awards. Leading the pack with the most nominations are (to no one’s surprise) Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. The two pop stars earned nine nominations each for their club-thumping track “Rain on Me.”

Coming in, right behind the two singers are Billie Eilish and The Weeknd, who earned six nominations apiece.

This year finds the awards ceremony introducing not one, but two new categories to the tried-and-true models. This year voters will see the categories for “Best Music Video from Home” and “Best Quarantine Performance” added to the list.

From now until Aug. 23, fans can vote on every single category, including the new additions on the VMA’s official website. The only group that will still accept votes until the night of the awards show is the “Best New Artist Category,” which includes Doja Cat, Jack Harlow, Lewis Capaldi, Roddy Ricch, Tate McRae, and Yungblud as nominees.

The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Centers on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 8  p.m. ET.

Kanye West to Return to Video Music Awards

kanyewestnewpromo-copy-300x242

I’mma let you finish but it looks like MTV has once again asked Kanye West to appear at this year’s Video Music Awards. The rapper, who is famously known as interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance for “Best Female Video” at the 2009 VMA’s will be returning to the stage of the crime when the channel’s yearly music video appreciation award airs.

MTV made the announcement on the Brooklyn Bridge this afternoon and shared the news through MTV’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Vine. The rapper is reportedly going to perform “Black Skinhead” from his new album Yeezus on the show. For those not counting, this will be West’s seventh time taking the stage at the award ceremony, tying Madonna’s current record.

In honor of his performance on the show, MTV will be play an hour-long block of West’s videos and performances on MTV Hits and MTV Jams from 4-5pm ET/PT.

Previously, MTV announced that they would be doing the same thing when it was revealed that Lady Gaga will be making her triumphant return to her Little Monster during the live broadcast following her hip surgery which kept her away from the stage for a while. Gaga, on the other hand, will be debuting her first single off  her new album which was revealed to be titled, “Applause.”

As for West, since his infamous moment at the VMA’s in 2009, he came back to perform a beautifully staged rendition of “Runaway” from My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in 2010 and in 2011, he and Jay-Z took the stage to perform their joint Watch the Throne track, “Otis.”

The 2013 ceremony is scheduled to take place on August 25th and will air live on the network from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. MTV is set to announce more performers and presenters for the award ceremony within the next couple of weeks since the show is slated to go on in less than three weeks.

Little Monsters, get ready to party because Mama Monster has announced that she will be performing at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. As of right now, the song she will be performing is being kept underwraps (much like the entire album), but chances are that it’s the first single off of ARTPOP which will be released on August 19.

This information might not come as a surprise to some of her biggest fans since Gaga does have some kind of a history with the network’s award show. In 2009, she performed a blood-soaked version of her song, “Paparazzi” while in 2011, she got into full male alter-ego mode by portraying Jo Calderone not only during her performance of “You & I,” but managed to stay in character throughout the entire show.

And then there was the meat dress incident.

In honor of her comeback (should we really call it that?), MTV Hits, the network’s 24-hour music channel (I know we’re surprised too), will be airing an hour block between 3-4 p.m. ET showing her music videos as well as performances from the past.

For those looking forward to the Video Music Awards, the show will be broadcast live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in New York City on August 25 stating at 9 p.m. on MTV.
