Ultra Music Festival to Become 18-and-Over

Thinking of hoping on a plane and heading to Miami for Ultra Music Festival next March? Well, you can, as long as you’re over the age of 18.

According to EDM.com, the Miami-based festival that has reached its 16th year of existence, has announced that they will now be strictly an 18-and-over festival as of 2015 after all the controversy and bad publicity that appeared during this year’s run.

News of this new implementation came during this weekend’s Electric Zoo Music Festival in New York City where flyers were handed out, breaking the news to the now underage attendees.

Aside from the new age requirements, the festival has taken a stand against the drug use that we all know occurs at these kinds of festivals. Ultra has officially taken to Twitter and the web to confirm the new policies.

“The safety and security of our attendees, artists/performers, and personnel are our utmost priority and concern. Event organizers maintain a zero tolerance policy respecting the possession, sale, contribution, or use of any illegal or illicit drugs of substances and any such possession, sale, contribution, or use is strictly prohibited.”

The new rules and regulations come on the heels of many negative stories from 2014’s weekend.

On the first day of the show, a security guard was almost trampled to death after a mob of people broke through the barricades that had been set up on the perimeter of the location.

Then, a 21-year-old man was pronounced dead after he fell ill. His friends reportedly took him to their car to “sleep off” the affects of the drugs he had taken, but when they returned they noticed he had died. After much investigations and back and forth, it was ruled an overdose.

At the end of the weekend, 76 festival-goers were arrested, 28 of which were for felonies and 118 were treated by paramedics.

The news got so bad, that at one point the City of Miami had decided that it would be in the citizens’ best interest if the festival found a new home. After a few weeks of debate, it was ruled that the festival would be able to return to their home of Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami.

Avicii Pulls Out of Ultra Due to Illness

In what came as a blow to many fans attending Ultra Music Festival in Miami this weekend, Avicii had to pull out last-minute.

Last night, TMZ has reported that the Swedish DJ had been hospitalized and would be missing his pre-Ultra performance at Miami Beach’s Hyde Beach at the SLS Hotel which had been changed to the Avicii Hotel for that night. Audience members had been told that he was rushed to the hospital for severe abdominal pains, nausea, and a fever which was recently revealed to be due to his gallbladder.

“I was with Tim at the hospital last night and this morning,” Ash Pournouri, Avicii’s manager said to E! News earlier in the day.

“He was really disappointed that he wasn’t able to come to the AVICII Hotel at SLS and perform for all his fans. He really appreciated all the hard work done by SLS, Ushuaia, At Night and SBE in creating the space.  It was frustrating for him not to have seen it. And of course, ULTRA has been so important to us for so many years, it’s a big letdown not being able to play.”

Upon finding out about his sudden illness and the possibility that he wouldn’t be able to perform, Ultra managed to wrangle in Deadmau5 to fill in for his headlining, closing gig on Saturday.

The DJ, whose real name is Tim Bergling, took to his Facebook to address the situation and inform fans on what is currently going on with his sudden hospitalization and what led to it. His statement can be read below.

“I’m really sorry but as some of you have already heard, I will not be playing Ultra Festival this weekend. My fans know that I have had issues in the past with my stomach and pancreatitis…I woke up on Wednesday morning with serious pain but I flew to Miami anyway, hoping that it would go away. The pain was still there when I landed so I went straight to hospital. I was treated and left later that night.Unfortunately, the pain came back yesterday afternoon and I returned to the hospital where they admitted me to stay overnight. My doctors have decided to operate and remove my gall bladder tomorrow morning. It’s a routine procedure and all going well, I expect to be fully recovered and back on my feet in time for my US True Tour.

Thanks for your concern everyone, it means a lot to me!

– From Avicii”

Ultra Music Festival 2014 is set to begin on Friday March 28  and go through until Sunday, March 30.

Ultra Music Festival Reveals Phase One

EDM-heads are well aware that Ultra is just a few months away, and now the yearly, electronic dance music festival has unveiled who will be taking the stage in Miami.

Last year, the festival decided to take a different turn and make the event two weekends long rather than the usual jam-packed one weekend. This year, it looks like the festivities will once again be returning to its usual one weekend full of partying after trying out the overambitious idea.

The weekend which will happen during March, 28th, 29th and 30th and will feature headliners ranging from Avicii, Armin van Buuren, Afrojack, Hardwell, Steve Angello, and Tiësto, you know just some of the biggest DJs in the world as well as live acts including Chase & Status and MGMT.

Now, the line-up that has been revealed has been coined as “Phase One,” and that a “Phase Two” will be coming soon, so who knows what that might entail.

Stage Collapses at Ultra Music Festival

UPDATE: The Miami Herald is now reporting that the lighting equipment fell during the set up and that the stage’s LED display fell onto the victims. Two of the victims were critically injured.

EDM fans from around the world have gather in Miami for what is to be the first year that Ultra Music Festival has two full weekends dedicated to half naked people, screaming and shouting and electronic music. Chances are that those attending the festival didn’t expect for one of the show’s stages to collapse and have several people stuck under it less than 24 hours before the weekend was to begin. According to The Miami Herald, up to four people have been critically injured.

While the music festival isn’t slated to start until tomorrow, last minute things were being done so that everything would be ready for the thousands of eager fans. The collapse apparently happened during a run-through of the sound systems before the gates were to open tomorrow afternoon.

In an email sent, Lt. Ignatius Carroll, a Miami Fire Rescue spokesman said that those victim were being taken to the near by Ryder Trauma Center. There has yet to be any information as to what caused the stage to collapse, but the current high winds could have played into it.

So far, residents of Downtown Miami have been posting pictures of the area full of police and emergency vehicles just like this one courtesy of @Jave305’s shot.
