‘Tonight Show’ Drummer Passes Away

Ed Shaughnessy

In another sad news of the week, longtime Tonight Show drummer, Ed Shaughnessy, has passed away at the age of 84.

The Los Angeles Time is reporting that the drummer passed away at his home in Calabasas, Calif. on Friday after suffering a heart attack.

While the musician is most well-known for drumming in the Tonight Show’s band, he had previously been part of Doc Severinsen’s band from 1963 to 1992. He also played drums for Aretha Franklin, Johnny Cash, and Oscar Peterson, according to his profile on the Percussive Arts Society’s hall of fame.

Shaughnessy joined the Tonight Show band back when it was still hosted by Johnny Carson after being in New York jazz bands as a teenager. After leaving the show, he still continued to play music.

A side note for those that don’t know, Shaughnessy was married to the late Ilene Woods who was the voice of Cinderella in the Walt Disney film.
