Watch: Weezer channel A-Ha for ‘Take on Me’ cover

A few weeks after releasing their surprise covers album, Weezer has returned with the music video for one of the songs on the album. On Tuesday (Feb. 12), the California-founded band unleashed their version of A-Ha’s one-hit wonder, “Take on Me.”

The music video begins with young Rivers Cuomo (played by “Stranger Things” star and Calpurina frontman Finn Wolfhard) drawing in his room when his mom announces that his friends are downstairs. Being a teenager, he’s indifferent about their arrival as his mother tells him that she will be leaving for the day.

As young Rivers arrives in the living room, he tells his friends that they can finally do whatever they want (taking out his dad’s Mercedes may not be a good idea) which includes blasting their music as loud as they want. That’s when the music video truly begins.

In between the shots of the band performing the song in the living room are shots that are a direct reference to A-Ha’s video for the song. Watch the music video for Weezer’s version of “Take on Me” above.

The “Take on Me” cover joins Weezer’s version of Toto’s “Africa” and TLC’s “No Scrubs” on the group’s recently released covers record, Weezer (aka The Teal Album).

The Teal Album was a surprise gift from the band to their fans as they wait for the band’s much-anticipated 12th studio album, The Black Album. The forthcoming album is due out March 1 through Crush / Atlantic Records. Pre-orders are available here.

The Black Album is the follow-up to the group’s surprise album, 2017’s Pacific Daydream.

To date, Weezer has given fans two tracks from the upcoming album, “Zombie Bastards” and current alternative radio staple “Can’t Knock the Hustle.”

In support of both The Teal Album and The Black Album, Weezer previously announced plans to embark on a massive North American arena tour. The trek will find the quartet touring across the continent alongside previous tour mates the Pixies.

The tour will begin on March 8 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville and conclude a month later on April 12 at the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas. Basement will open for both bands throughout the full excursion while TV on the Radio will only play at the tour’s New York City stop. The full itinerary can be found here.

Weezer surprise fans with covers album

Weezer fans may be waiting patiently for the band’s upcoming 12th studio album, but it looks like the four-piece has just thrown them a curveball. On Thursday (Jan. 24), the California-founded band unleashed a surprise covers album. Titled Weezer (aka The Teal Album), the ten-track record finds the band covering songs from artists from the 80s and 90s.

The tracklist includes their hit cover of Toto’s “Africa,” A-Ha’s “Take on Me,” Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” TLC’s “No Scrubs” and more. The full album can be streamed on Spotify.

The Teal Album comes months after the band finally confirmed the release of their much-anticipated The Black Album. The record will reportedly see a release date of March 1. Pre-orders can be found here.
