The Weeknd, SZA, Travis Scott share their ‘Game of Thrones’-inspired track ‘Power is Power’

A week after announcing plans to release a “Game of Thrones”-inspired album, HBO and Columbia Records have finally unveiled its first single. On Thursday (April 18), the Weeknd, SZA, and Travis Scott shared their contribution to the fast-approaching new record.

The three-and-a-half-minute collaboration is titled “Power is Power,” a direct quote from HBIC Cersei Lannister to everyone’s least favorite Master of Coin Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish in season two of the series. Listen to “Power is Power” above.

In addition to the trio, For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones) will also include contributions from the National, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, X Ambassadors, Ellie Goulding, James Arthur, Maren Morris, and many more.

For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones) is due out April 26. Additionally, Columbia Records is also offering several vinyl packages. One of the exclusive vinyl packages will feature nine different covers for the customer to choose from. The nine different covers represent the different houses featured on the series. According to the pre-order listing, the covers are “extremely limited” with only 2500 copies available worldwide.

While the digital versions of the album will be available at the end of the month, the vinyl versions will not be available until the end of July (July 26 to be specific). Pre-orders for For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones) are available for purchase here. The full track listing for the album can be found below.

The final season of “Game of Thrones” premiered this past Sunday to a massive 17.4 million viewers. This broke HBO’s previous viewership rating record of 16.9 million which is attributed to the series’ season 7 finale.

Game of Thrones-inspired album to be released at the end of April

It looks like HBO is sparing no expense when it comes to promoting the final season of their massive cult hit, “Game of Thrones.” On Tuesday (April 9), the network announced a partnership with Columbia Records to release an album inspired by the show. Titled For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones), the record is due out April 26; a week after the series’ final season is set to premiere.

The record will include contributions from the National, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, X Ambassadors, Ellie Goulding, James Arthur, Maren Morris, and many more. The album will reportedly also include a major collaboration from SZA, the Weeknd, and Travis Scott.

A source close to the project confirmed the rumor to Pitchfork over the weekend, revealing that “’Game of Thrones’ asked the Weeknd to record the song for fans. The Weeknd then brought SZA and Travis Scott onto the project.”

The National’s inclusion on the upcoming album shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as the band recorded “The Rains of Castamere” in 2012 for season two of the series.

Pre-orders for For the Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones) are available for purchase here. The album will feature nine different covers to represent the different houses featured on the series. According to Columbia Records, the covers are “extremely limited” and encourage fans to purchase the album with their favorite house as the cover before they run out.

It’s safe to assume that House Stark, House Lannister, and House Targaryen will be the first to go.

The soundtrack comes on the heels of several collaborations including Urban Decay, Mountain Dew, Shake Shack and most recently Oreo.

The final season of Game of Thrones lands on HBO on April 14.

Riot Fest Toronto Announces Rocking Line-Up

wpid-toronto-2014-date-announce1

Toronto is about to be hit with some good music later this year.

Riot Fest organizers revealed earlier today the full line-up for their Toronto edition of Riot Fest. The festival which will take place at Downsview Park in Toronto announced that Canadian bands City and Colour and Billy Talent will be performing at this year’s event, but also making the line-up are The National, Rise Against, and Death Cab for Cutie.

But then the festival found themselves creating the most perfect coincidence to mankind or at least to some of our teenaged hearts happen; Taking Back Sunday and Brand New are on the same bill.

After all these years, Taking Back Sunday and Brand New will perform at the same exact show, though there is no word on whether or not it means that the two former friend bands will be playing on the same day, let alone on the same stage, but one can dream.

Tickets for the Riot Fest Toronto can be found on Ticketfly, while the show is slated to take place on Sept. 6-7. The full line-up can be seen below, thanks to the people behind the festival.

Now, is anyone going to be nice enough to help us hitch a ride to Toronto in early September?

Boston Calling 2014 Reveal Line-Up

bostoncalling2

Festival season is in full effect now and another one has just announced its lineup.

Boston Calling has announced the artists that will be taking the stages at this year’s event. The show, which will take place during the weekend of September 5-7 will include headlining acts such as The Replacements, Lorde, The National, Nas and the Roots, Childish Gambino, the 1975 and many more. The full lineup list can be seen below.

bostoncalling

By the time Boston Calling is set to begin, many of the artists on the list would have already performed at several other festivals that have taken place during the Spring and Summer. This past weekend, Lorde and The Replacements took the stage at Coachella for the second time.

Unlike Lorde, The Replacements got a little help from Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong on vocals due to Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg suffering from a reported back injury. Here’s hoping that by September he’ll be able to perform.

Replacement’s manager, Darren Hill, revealed that the reconstructed band have been asked to play almost every festival this year, but have been choosy about which to do. Hill admits the band decided on Boston Calling because of the connection that they have to the scene.

“The Replacements always had an affinity, a really strong connection, to Boston and the Boston scene,” said Hill. “I’m sure you can expect a surprise in Boston.”

Pre-sale tickets for the three-day show will go on sale beginning Thursday through Ticketmaster. Three-day general admission passes will run you $150 while the VIP passes cost $250.

Watch the official announcement from festival organizers.

Sigur Rós Cover “The Rains of Castamere”

sigurros

Season four of Game of Thrones is officially on its way and after a “just desserts” kind of episode last night, fans can;t wait for more episodes especially after waiting a year for it to return to our screens.

About two weeks ago, the guys in Sigur Rós had revealed that they would be fortunate enough to have a cameo on the show and it just happened to be last night’s episode. In honor of their cameo, the band had recorded a cover of “The Rains of Castamere.”

At the time of the announcement, they had released a snippet of their cover, but over the weekend before the episode aired, the full cover had been released. This is not the first time that the song had been covered or that a band or musician had gotten the chance to have a slight appearance on the HBO show. During season two, The National got the opportunity to record the song for the show and last season, Will Champion of Coldplay played a drummer during the “Red Wedding” aka “The Rains of Castamere.”

It’s all connected, guys. Check out Sigur Rós’ cover and their cameo after the song.

The National Release ‘I Need My Girl’ Video

thenational

Happy Valentine’s Day from The National because the band have just released the music video for their song, “I Need My Girl” from last year’s Trouble Will Find Me.

The video features elegantly dressed couples of various ages, dancing slowly and closely, fitting enough for the one day of the year where you are supposed to prove your love for someone (that was meant to be sarcastic). Anyways, check out the video below as you enjoy all your chocolate, flowers and jewelry.
