The Menzingers announce their sixth studio album, share ‘Anna’

Get ready because the Menzingers are releasing a brand new album later this year. On Monday (July 15), the Pennsylvania-founded act announced the upcoming release of their sixth studio effort. Dubbed Hello Exile, the album is due out Oct. 4 through Epitaph Records. Pre-orders for the record are currently available for purchase on the band’s website.

Hello Exile is the follow-up to 2017’s highly successful (and much-loved) After the Party.

For this album, the Menzingers reconnected with previous collaborator Will Yip. Yip previously worked with the group on After the Party. According to a press statement, the four-piece spent a month working with Yip on the 12-track LP.

“This is the longest amount of time we’ve ever worked with [producer] Will [Yip]. We wanted to make sure these stories didn’t get lost in the music, so we kept it to a lot of room sounds with the guitar and bass and drums.”

To coincide with the new album announcement, the group decided to treat fans to a small taste of the album by releasing its lead single. Listen to “Anna” above.

In a statement, frontman Greg Barnett reveals what led to the band selecting “Anna” as the record’s first single.

“You know, it was kind of a tough decision, but we just thought that it was a great summertime song.”

He continues: “It’s super-hooky and super-catchy. We went back and forth with some of the songs, but at the end of the day we’re just really excited about ‘Anna.’ This is a very storytelling album, and I think Anna is a pretty good representation of the rest of it.”

Because a new album and single weren’t enough, the Menzingers have also unveiled tour dates for later this year. Their upcoming North American fall tour will find the foursome performing at venues across the continent.

The 33-stop trek includes shows in Detroit, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Phoenix, Dallas, Atlanta, Tampa, Toronto, and more. The fall tour begins on Oct. 25 at the Athenaeum in Columbus and concludes a month and a half later on Dec. 7 at the House of Blues in Boston.

Tigers Jaw and Culture Abuse will join the Menzingers on select dates.

Tickets for the upcoming tour go on sale this Friday, July 19.

Eminem, Jack White, Yeah Yeah Yeahs to headline Governors Ball 2018

Eminem, Jack White, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are just a handful of artists who will be heading to New York this summer for the eighth annual Governors Ball Music Festival. On Wednesday (Jan. 3), the full lineup for the 2018 incarnation of the annual summertime festival was announced. Like previous years, this year’s lineup boosts a mix of artists from different genres making sure to satisfy everyone’s music taste.

For Eminem, Governors Ball will mark the rapper’s second major 2018 music festival appearance. On Tuesday, Jan. 2, Eminem was confirmed as one of the three main headliners for Coachella 2018. The two music festival engagements will be in support of the rapper’s luke warmly-received ninth studio album, Revival.

For Jack White, his appearance at Governors Ball just adds to the speculation that he will be releasing a new album sometime in the new year. Though White previously teased fans with a weird video, no official title or release date has been given for the new album. White’s last studio album was 2014’s Lazaretto.

For the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Governors Ball marks the band’s first major show in a long time. Back in October, the group performed their first concert in four years when they took the stage to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of their debut album, Fever to Tell.

In addition to Eminem, Jack White, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, this year’s Governors Ball lineup also includes acts like N.E.R.D, Silk City (Diplo and Mark Ronson), the Gaslight Anthem, Halsey, CVRCHES, Cut Copy, Galantis, Japandroids, Third Eye Blind, Vic Mensa, LANY, The Menzingers, Wolf Alice, The Struts, and Sir Sly.

Governors Ball will mark N.E.R.D’s first show in New York since 2010. The Pharrell Williams-led act recently released their critically acclaimed fifth studio album, No_One Every Really Dies.

For The Gaslight Anthem, 2018 will mark the ten-year anniversary of the release of their sophomore, and much beloved album, The ’59 Sound. To celebrate the record’s anniversary, the band will perform the album in full during their time slot at the music festival. The album went on to be named eMusic’s “Best Album of 2008.”

Three-day general admission tickets, as well as VIP passes, are currently available at a special “announce day” price. Regular ticket prices will resume at midnight on Jan. 4. The 2018 edition of Governors Ball Music Festival will take place during the weekend of June 1 – 3 at Randall’s Island in New York City. For more information about Governors Ball, head on over to the music festival’s website here.

Bands join forces for Orlando compilation

Following the horrific Pulse Nightclub shooting, musicians have gathered to help support the victims/families of the shooting and the city of Orlando however they can. Panic! at the Disco held a blood drive and released a limited edition t-shirt with all proceeds being donate. PVRIS and Beartooth did the same by releasing limited edition t-shirts while You Blew It!, who call Orlando home, released an EP benefiting Center Orlando, an LGBT center providing counseling in the wake of the shooting.

On Friday (June 17), it was announced that a slew of artists have joined forces to release a compilation titled Forever Beautiful: A Collection Of Love For Orlando. The record will feature a total of 49 bands with all proceeds from the release going directly to the OneOrlando fund; the fund created to assist those who were victims of the shooting. Bands like  Taking Back Sunday, Real Friends, New Found Glory, Modern Baseball, Allison Weiss, Knuckle Puck, Foxing, Bad Religion, Somos, Anthony Green, You Blew It!, Into It. Over It., Pity Sex, Pinegrove, the Menzingers, Citizen, Thin Lips, Sorority Noise, Tiny Moving Parts, Turnover, Anti Flag, Tigers Jaw, Basement, and more are featured on the massive album.

“This compilation is a love letter to the community of Orlando, FL. Following the tragic events at Pulse Nightclub on June 12th, we wanted to show our support and love for our LGBTQ community the best way we knew how; through music,” begins a collective statement from all the contributing artists.

“The tracks on this album were all individually contributed by the bands and artists themselves; artists from Orlando, New York, California, England, and all over the globe. All proceeds from this compilation will be donated to support the victims of the Pulse shooting as part of the OneOrlando Fund as a symbol of solidarity as our city rebuilds. The price of this album is whatever amount you would like to donate to this cause.”

The compilation can be found here. If you want to help out and donate directly to OneOrlando, that link can be found here.

Atlanta’s Wrecking Ball Fest announces first set of 2016 acts

Atlanta’s Wrecking Ball Festival will be returning in 2016. What started out as a celebration of famed Atlanta concert venue, The Masquerade has now become a yearly event. On Tuesday (March 22), the people behind the punk-centric music festival unveiled its first back of acts for the 2016 incarnation.

Acts like The Bouncing Souls, American Football, Gorilla Biscuits, The Promise Ring, American Nightmare, Deafheaven, Touche Amore, Tigers Jaw, The Menzingers, Anti-Flag, the soon-to-be defunct Motion City Soundtrack and many more will head to Georgia in mid-August. What’s surprising about the newly revealed lineup is the addition of Thursday who went on hiatus several years ago (2011 to be exact). According to a tweet from frontman Geoff Rickly, “That line-up!! We said yes on Sunday because we couldn’t say no to THAT show. Literally had no plans to reunite b4.”

The band’s reunion comes a day after they posted a cryptic message on their official Twitter. No word yet on if this will be the beginning of something new or a one-off gig, even if Rickly’s tweet seems to be pointing at the latter.

The Wrecking Ball Festival will return to Atlanta during the weekend of Aug. 12-14. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale beginning next Friday, April 1 while it looks like a slew of more bands will be announced at a later date. For now, check out the current lineup for the summer event

Taking Back Sunday Show Ft. Lauderdale What ‘Happiness Is…’

DSC01321

If you were to tell the “emo kids” of the 2000s that one of the bands that helped shape that scene would still be selling out concert venues more than ten years later, their response would probably be a scoff and a “well duh.”

But as history has shown, many bands who hit it big back then have either changed their line-up considerably or all together broken up. But Taking Back Sunday has shown that they could withstand the test of time by selling out the same venue not once, but twice, in two years.

Like entering any darkly lit night club on a Saturday night, as soon as you entered Revolution Live, you were instantly greeted by hoards of people who showed up early just to proclaim a spot of their own. Through the cigarette smoke and people clinging onto cans of beer, finding a spot became one of the most difficult parts of the evening, though not impossible.

In the background, the first band of the night, letlive. was on the stage entertaining fans with their screaming which even included two covers of some iconic hardcore bands. The first was a cover of “The Deadly Rhythm” from the newly reunited Refused. The second was Black Flag’s “Fix Me.” But as the song began, commotion from the second floor of the venue got louder and louder with security shoving people out of the way to make room. It was only a short time later that someone pointed out that a member of Black Flag was there.

After one more song, letlive. ended not only their set for the evening, but their time on the Happiness Is…Tour.

As the band and their crew moved quickly to take down and set up the stage, it was a little over half an hour until the second act of the evening took the stage; The Menzingers.

The Menzingers quickly went into their first song of the night, “I Don’t Want to Be an Asshole.” As they played, the band’s sound began to reminiscing of being a teenager. Their songs sounded like music those “weirdos” who went to high school in the 2000s used to listen to and could probably fit in with the other songs on our old school MP3 players.

As they were getting ready to begin another song, the screen behind them lit up with Taking Back Sunday frontman Adam Lazzara on the a screen. Attention was soon placed on Lazzara, but calmed down once the audience realized that it was just a gif (a very short clip being played on a loop). Though some were bummed that Lazzara was not currently waving at everyone live, the excitement for The Menzingers did not waver especially when they played a cover of Rancid’s “Roots Radical.”

Once their set wrapped, the stage went dark to let the road crew do their job and get ready for the headliners. As the commotion of setting up the stage went on for half an hour, the music in the background kept audience members awake and pumped, especially when “Forget About Dre” began to play the background.

On several instances, the lights turned on, giving false hopes to the packed venue. But the final time was different.

It was time.

Smoke began to fill the dark stage as band members began to make their way to their assigned spots. The final person to enter the stage was Lazzara. Once the lights went up, the singer was no longer on the stage, but rather on one of the side bars above the pit. Dressed in black, he began to sing the lyrics to the “Flicker, Fade” the first single off of Happiness Is…with blue lights flickering behind him.

“Flicker, Fade” quickly transitioned into “What’s it Feels Like to Be a Ghost?” from 2006’s Louder Now with little cartoon ghost images flashing behind the band on the screen.

As the song wrapped, Lazzara began to speak to the audience. He proceeded to tell a story of an awkward interaction guitarist John Nolan had with a girl who was dressed in short shorts. Due to the closeness of Lazzara’s mouth and the microphone, it was hard to hear what exactly happened, but somehow he managed to find the girl in the pit and point her out.

Kind of a cool story to tell your friends in the future.

As the night progressed, fans of the band got a set list that contained songs from several of their albums, though tracks from 2008’s New Again seemed to be left off the 21-song list.

“Timberwolves at New Jersey,” “Ghost Man on Third,” “You Know How I Do,” and “You’re So Last Summer” made appearances on behalf of Tell All Your Friends which turned ten just last year.

One of the funniest parts of the evening happened towards the end of “You’re So Last Summer” when a video montage of members of the tour lit up the screen behind the band. In it, the members were all dancing around, even kicking their legs up as if they were some Moulin Rouge rejects dancing the can-can.

“We’re going to let this play for a little longer,” joked Lazzara as he turned to stare at the screen.

Where You Want to Be is probably one of their biggest albums (alongside TAYF), so it was only fitting to have several tracks from the album performed live. Tracks included “Bonus Mosh Pt. II,” “One-Eighty by Summer” which according to Lazzara was a request by opening act letlive., and of course “A Decade Under the Influence.” During the song, Nolan could be seen, from his little corner on stage left, making random and kooky faces as Lazzara’s voice changed throughout the song.

Louder Now was a hit album among fans and it was nice to hear songs likes “Liar (It Takes One to Know One),”  “Spin,” and “Error: Operator” get played live rather than hear it directly from a CD. Deep down inside though, there was some hope that the band would play “Miami” since Ft. Lauderdale is as close to Miami as any band ever gets.

The rest of the set list was made up of songs from Happiness Is…which included “Stood a Chance,” “How I Met Your Mother,” and a song that made Lazzara somber up a little bit as the band performed it, “Better Homes and Gardens.” For those listening to the lyrics of the song and happen to know a little bit of band member history, it would only take a few second to realize that the inspiration for the song was Lazzara’s engagement falling apart back in 2007.

Though the energy in the room was somber as it was performed, it picked up right after the song was over, proving that “emo” songs don’t always dampen the mood.

Before long, the last song on the “official” set list ended and the lights went down. For once, no one moved knowing that in a few seconds the band would be back out to perform their encore.

The band emerged on to the stage with Lazzara holding an acoustic guitar in his hands, to begin the first encore song, a track titled “Call Me in the Morning” off of 2011’s self-titled.

Thankfully, they did not end the show with that song and picked up the pace when they began the first notes of “Cute without the ‘E’ (Cut from the Team).”

If it wasn’t for the insulated wall Revolution Live has, there was a chance the people at the Broward Theater of the Performing Arts down the street would be able to hear the hundreds of voices screaming together “and will you tell all your friends you’ve got your gun to my head.”

But fans didn’t need to start chanting “one more song” once it wrapped because quickly, they went into another one of their big hits, “MakeDamnSure.” If anyone thought the crowd couldn’t get anymore insane, they would be wrong. It was as if the entire venue went from a ten on the energy scale to an 11 throughout the song.

As the last notes of “MakeDamnSure” were held by the instruments and Lazzara’s (and the audience’s) vocals, it was the end of the road on memory lane. Those 20 and 30-somethings who wanted to relive their youth got to do so with the band that probably got them through some of the toughest days of being a teenager and maybe gave them a new-found love of music.

It was a trip that for just a moment you could feel like the worst things you could do was dye your hair hot pink without your parents knowing, wear too much eyeliner, and writing all over your Converse.

A simpler time. And man, how they are missed.

Letlive. Barred from Orlando Venue

image

Bad news if you were planning on seeing letlive. live at the House of Blues in Orlando, FL; they’ve been banned from the venue.

Letlive. were scheduled to perform at the House of Blues which is located in Downtown Disney in Lake Buena Vista, FL as one of Taking Back Sunday’s opening acts, alongside The Menzingers, on April 3.

According to the band, House of Blues Orlando notified them that they had been pulled from the event, but gave no other reason as to why this was done.

“We cannot offer any details as to why since we were given none ourselves,” they wrote on Facebook.

Instead of letting it get to them, they have revealed that they are currently planning to schedule a one-off show in the area for those who were going to the show to see them. A crummy situation for attendees who wanted to see Taking Back Sunday and The Menzingers as well.

Read the band’s full statement straight from Facebook below.

“Ladies and Gentlemen that were planning on attending the Lake Buena Vista, Florida date at the House Of Blues on the upcoming tour with Taking Back Sunday and The Menzingers and expecting to see ll.- due to reasons we cannot control, we will not be permitted to play said date.

We have just been notified by the people at Disney Orlando/HOB that we have been pulled from the event. We cannot offer any details as to why since we were given none ourselves.

Rumor has it that Goofy, Pluto, and most of Toontown were in protest against the decision, but Chairman Mouse exercised veto powers and struck down the proposition in the end.

In the meantime, we will be trying to set up a one off at another venue in place of the this. Thank you so much for the unwavering support. It’s moments like these we deeply appreciate it/you.

Yours,
ll.”

This will not be the first time that the band have had a run-in with a venue.

Last year, the band were playing The Tabernacle in Atlanta when frontman Jason Butler climbed a balcony during their set. Staff and security at the venue were less than amused by the antics and decided to cut their set short because of it. No word if this is what kind of led to the banning.
