Death Cab for Cutie extend 2019 tour itinerary

Death Cab for Cutie may have previously announced plans to embark on a massive springtime North American tour, but now it looks like the group is ready to extend it into the summer months. On Friday (Jan. 18), the Washington state-founded band announced the latest addition to their 2019 tour itinerary. Set to take place during the months of June, July, and August, the 16-stop tour will find the group performing in cities such as Portland, New Haven, Queens, Detroit, Toronto, Colorado (Morrison), Louisville, and St. Louis.

The summertime tour dates will begin on June 7 at Stage AE in Pittsburgh and conclude two months later on Aug. 11 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Jenny Lewis, MITSKI, Car Seat Headrest, and LaLa LaLa will open on selected dates. Pre-sale tickets for the newly announced dates will go on sale beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22. General ticket sales will then go on sale a few days later on Friday, Jan. 25.

The new summer-centric tour dates come months after the band announced plans to embark on a springtime tour. That trek will commence on March 29 at the Joint in Las Vegas and conclude with a two-night stint on April 15 and 16 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

Like the springtime tour, the summertime excursion will be in support of Death Cab for Cutie’s recent record, Thank You for Today. The record, the band’s ninth studio effort, peaked at the number 13 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was met with mixed reviews from critics and fans alike.

The record produced several hit singles including “Gold Rush,” “Autumn Love,” and “I Dreamt We Spoke Again.”

Thank You for Today is the follow-up quintet’s 2015 Grammy-nominated album, Kintsugi.

As if the newly added tour dates weren’t enough, the five-piece is set to perform on NPR’s Live from Here with Chris Thile show on Saturday, Jan. 19, and NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday, Jan. 21.

Death Cab for Cutie announce new album, stream new single

Death Cab for Cutie will have a new set of tunes to play when they hit the road later this year. On Wednesday (June 13), the Washington-founded band formally announced the release their ninth studio album. Titled Thank You for Today, the new album is due out Aug. 17 through Atlantic Records.

The forthcoming record was produced by Rich Costey who produced Death Cab’s previous studio album, KINTSUGI. Thank You for Today marks the band’s first record to feature newly added members Dave Depper and Zac Rae; both Depper and Rae have been part of the group’s touring band since 2015.

In conjunction with the new album announcement, the band also debuted the album’s lead single, “Gold Rush.”

Heading over to NPR to discuss the new song, frontman Ben Gibbard explains that the song is not about complaining and yearning for the good old days, but rather an observation on how things have changed.

“The song is not a complaint about how things were better [back then] or anything like that. It’s an observation,” Gibbard explains. “[But] more about coming to terms with the passage of time and losing the people and the moments in my life all over again as I walk down a street that is now so unfamiliar.”

Watch the Alex Southam-directed music video for “Gold Rush” above.

Pre-orders for Thank You for Today are currently available here. Those who pre-order the new album will receive an instant download of “Gold Rush.”

Later this month, Death Cab for Cutie will debut the new song live on CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The band will take over the stage on Thursday, June 21.

In support of the new album’s release, Death Cab for Cutie previously announced plans to hit the road for an intimate venue fall tour. The upcoming tour will begin on Sept. 24 at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene, Oregon and conclude a month later on Oct. 23 at the Hard Rock Live in Orlando. The complete list of upcoming tour dates can be seen here.
