Silversun Pickups announce first new album in five years

After five years without a new album, the Silversun Pickups are ready to give us a new set of tunes this summer. On Thursday (April 11), the California-founded band announced the upcoming release of their fifth studio album. Titled Widow’s Weeds, the forthcoming record is due out June 7 through New Machine Recordings.

Super-producer Butch Vig produced the new album. The journey to the final product featured several obstacles including Vig’s previous tour commitment with his band Garbage, the death of keyboardist Joe Lester’s father, and frontman Brian Aubert’s drinking downward spiral fueled by his depression.

After Aubert received treatment for his condition and Vig’s scheduled cleared, it was time to hit the studio to record the new album. According to Aubert, the ten-track record has a sense of mourning to it.

“The record does have a mourning vibe, but it’s not sad. It’s change,” Aubert explains about the new record in a press statement.

“It’s growing up and moving on and letting go of things. And it’s okay to be sad about those things and mourn them. It’s actually healthy to do so and take the time to do it. At the end of the day, it’s going to be much better and much more fulfilling when you get through it.”

In conjunction with the new album’s announcement, the band unleashed its lead single “It Doesn’t Matter Why.” Listen to the new track above.

Pre-orders for Widow’s Weeds are currently available on the band’s website where they’re offering vinyls, cassettes, and even a test pressing of the record.

Widow’s Weeds is the follow-up to 2014’s Better Nature.

South Florida’s The Shark announces Sharkwrecked at the Riptide Music Festival

If you were an alternative music lover growing up in South Florida in the 2000s, then you experienced the struggle of trying to find a radio station that would meet your musical needs. Between the constant loop of Top 20 hits, rap and hip-hop, and indie college stations, if you liked “alternative” music, then you were glued to your CD or mp3 player (or the iPod later on). To fill the much-complained about void, radio station 104.3 The Shark was launched in 2015, much to the delight of those people. Since then, the station has done a great job of bringing artist who would normally pass over the lower part of the Sunshine State in favor of other locations.

On Monday (Sept. 26), The Shark once again proved why they earned the title of “Best Radio Station” earlier this year during the Miami New Times‘ yearly “The Best Of” poll. During the broadcast of their daily show, “The Big Mistake” DJs Ashley O. and Toast announced the first annual Sharkwrecked at the Riptide Music Festival. The event, which will take place on Saturday Dec. 3 in Ft. Lauderdale, will feature performances by a slew of artists such as Good Charlotte, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, The Struts, Silversun Pickups, Saint Motel and many more. While unveiling the news, the station’s mass emails to the Chum Club (the name for their email subscribers) also announced that there will be “more to be announced.”

Pre-sale tickets will go on sale beginning this Friday Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. local time. Tickets for the event will be exclusively sold on the Riptide Music Festival’s website here. For a limited-time (and while supplies last), tickets for Sharkwrecked will be $35. For more information about the event or to subscribe to the Chum Club, head on over to The Shark’s website here. Earlier this year, the radio station launched their successful first mini music festival, Undertow Jam. The show included performances by Young the Giant, The Stumbellas, Bearhands, Joywave, JR JR , Finish Ticket, and Sharkwrecked artist, The Struts.

On Wednesday (March 23), festival organizers unveiled the complete list for the upcoming summer gig.

Other performers will include J. Cole, Lana Del Rey, Ellie Goulding, Disclosure, Major Lazer, Jane’s Addiction, Haim, The 1975, City and Colour, M83, Halsey, Bloc Party, Saint Motel, Melanie Martinez, The Joy Formidable,The Front Bottoms,Grimes, Hardwell, Martin Garrix, Silversun Pickups, MuteMath, Two Door Cinema Club, Big Gram, Foals, Bastille, Miike Snow, and many more

The lineup for the 2016 edition of the festival is so massive, that it looks like after teasing last year, the festival will officially become a four-day event. Instead of beginning on Friday, like it has in the past, the show will now kick-off on Thursday. The four-day festival is set to take place during the weekend of July 28-31 at Chicago’s Grant Park. Tickets for the summer festival will go on sale beginning today at 11 am EST on the festival’s website.
