Could Panic! at the Disco’s sound go in a more hardcore direction on a future album? If what fans are hearing recently is true, then it may just happen. On Monday (Dec. 17), Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie took to Twitch to give fans a sampling of a metal version of a previously released song.
Urie’s video features him playing “Fortnite” while blasting the metal version of “The Calendar” in the background. Obviously, the new version of the song is a complete departure from the original track which is featured on 2011’s lukewarmly received Vices & Virtues.
The minute-and-a-half clip comes less than a week after Urie spoke with RockSound after the group was named “Artist of the Year.” During the chat, the musician admitted that he had been dabbling with metal renditions of Panic! songs for some time.
“I actually just played something for my bandmates recently… we have an old song called ‘The Calendar’ and I made a metal version of it from years back,” Urie explained.
He adds: “It’s like 90 seconds long and is really fun. Who knows, I might even put that out on SoundCloud on a whim sometime soon!”
For newer fans of the band, the metal rendition may come as a bit of a surprise, but for others, it’s not that surprising at all. Back in 2015, the singer appeared on Entertainment Tonight to promote the band’s at-the-time new album —2015’s Death of a Bachelor—when he tasked with performing different renditions of the band’s hits.
While all the other songs got over the top renditions, the album’s lead single, “Hallelujah,” was made into to a hardcore tune. The video of Urie performing the different styles of songs can be found here.
As for Panic! at the Disco, the band will embark on the second leg of their Pray for the Wicked tour in the new year. The upcoming trek begins on Jan. 10 at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo and concludes a little over a month alter on Feb. 20 at the Golden1 Center in Sacramento. Two Feet and Betty Who will open for Panic! throughout the upcoming dates. The full list of tour can be found here.
If that wasn’t enough, the band also announced that they perform during “The Voice” finale on Tuesday, Dec. 18, a 9 p.m. EST. They will perform “Hey Look Ma I Made It” and current radio hit “High Hopes” during the season finale.
