Plain White T’s ‘Hey There Delilah’ to become a television series

If you grew up in the 2000s, then there’s a chance you still know all the words to the Plain White T’s breakout single, “Hey There Delilah.” Over a decade after the song took over the airwaves, it looks like the song is going to make its leap from music video format to television series. On Tuesday (Aug. 7), the Illinois-founded band announced that the smash single will be getting the television series treatment. According to a press release, the series has been described as a “contemporary fairy tale” which will expand on the song’s story.

For those not familiar with the song and its lyrics, the tune tells the tale of a long-distance relationship between a struggling singer-songwriter and a New York City university student. The songwriter pledges to write a song for the young woman on the night they meet, and that promise changes their lives in unexpected ways.

Plain White T’s frontman Tom Higgenson along with writer Jeremy Desmon (Pump Up the Volume, One Hit Wonder), and Lively McCabe Entertainment co-president Michael Barra came up with the concept for the series. According the announcement’s press release, Desmon will write the series while the band’s management company, Primary Wave, will pitch the series to networks and studios.

“It’s been more than a decade since ‘Hey There Delilah’ was released, and people always ask me about it. A whole lot of people really connected with that song, and I’m very proud of that,” begins Higgenson.

“I’m so excited to have an opportunity to give a new generation the chance to form their own connection with the song, and fall in love with its story through this new project.”

“‘Hey There Delilah’ is a perfect example of an iconic story song that has introduced characters and a premise to a massive multi-generational audience, and is begging to be expanded into a full-length story for contemporary television audiences,” mirrors Barra.

“Lively McCabe is thrilled to be working with Tom, Deb [Klein], and Jeremy to bring it to life on the screen.”

“Hey There Delilah” was written by Higgenson and appears on the Plain White T’s third studio album, All That We Needed. The song, the band’s third single from that record, went on to spend 35 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart including several weeks at the number one spot. The song also earned the band two Grammy nominations in 2007 in the Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group categories.

While news of the band’s song becoming a television series is currently trending, earlier in the day, the five-piece announced plans to embark on a fall time tour. The Parallel Universe tour will begin on Oct. 16 at Bogart’s in Cincinnati and conclude a month later on Nov. 17 at the Fallsview Casino Resort in Niagara Fall, Ontario. Armors, Saywecanfly, and A Summer High will open for the band throughout the excursion.

The upcoming fall tour will be in support of the quintet’s forthcoming new record, Parallel Universe. Parallel Universe is due out Aug. 24 through Fearless Records. Pre-orders for Parallel Universe are currently available on the Plain White T’s website.

Plain White T’s announce new album ‘Parallel Universe’

The Plain White T’s are back and ready to give fans some brand new tunes this summer. On Friday (June 15), the Illinois-founded band confirmed the release of their upcoming eighth studio album. Titled Parallel Universe, the new record is due out Aug. 24 through Fearless Records. The 14-track album will not only be the group’s first new record since 2015’s self-released American Nights, it will also mark their return to Fearless Records after 13 years.

The album was produced by Matt Squire whose resume features Panic! at the Disco and Ariana Grande.

In conjunction with the new album announcement, the band premiered the music video for the record’s first single, “Your Body.” Watch the sci-fi-themed, Ex Machina-influenced clip above.

Earlier in the week, the band headed over to SiriusXM’s The Pulse to premiere “Your Body” and a second song titled “Bonnie I Want You.”
