Green Day, Stevie Wonder, The Killers to headline the Global Citizen Festival

Green Day, the Killers, and Stevie Wonder are just some of the big names set to invade New York City later this year for the 2017 Global Citizen Festival. On Tuesday (Aug. 1), the annual, good-cause music festival announced a diverse lineup for the 2017 incarnation of the musical event. Pharrell Williams, Big Sean, Andra Day, the Lumineers, Alessia Cara, and the Chainsmokers will also be featured on the lengthy bill. According to a press release from the music festival, more special guests will be announced over the upcoming weeks.

The goal of the Global Citizen organization is to ask their followers, referred to as Global Citizens, to hold their leaders accountable for major world issues. Prior to the big concert event, Global Citizen will be campaigning to create major changes in the areas of education, food security, healthcare, gender equality, and sanitation. In addition to that, the group also aims to end poverty, take on climate change, and fight all kinds of inequalities by 2030.

“We’re grateful to be a part of this year’s Global Citizen Festival,” begins Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong in a statement. “American aid programs make a significant difference in the betterment of lives at home and around the world, and we should all want these programs to become stronger, not weaker. We all play a part in seeing this mission through and it starts with calling on all our leaders.”

“In this crucial time, there is nothing more exciting to me than having the honor of giving my gift of song, words and motivation to the Global Citizen Festival,” said two-time performer Stevie Wonder. “When we commit ourselves to life issues, we are showing love of the Most High. I was, I am and will always be, a citizen connected to the spirit of everyone on this planet moving forward. Let’s go!”

“We can’t wait to get back to our hometown of New York City and play for 60,000 people who have done amazing things to change the world,” begins the Chainsmokers’ statement. “We are so thankful to our fans for getting online and taking action to support less fortunate people around the world. We’ll see you on Sept. 23!”

The 2017 Global Citizen Festival will take place on Sept. 23 at New York’s Central Park. According to the music festival’s website, they are expecting approximately 60,000 Global Citizens to attend the musical event. Like the past years, tickets for the show will be distributed via a lottery system. Coldplay, Ellie Goulding, The Chainsmokers to headline Global Citizen Festival Hamburg

The first annual Global Citizen Festival Hamburg has been announced and some big names are set to his the stage this summer. On Tuesday (Feb. 28), the international advocacy organization announced that Coldplay, The Chainsmokers, Ellie Goulding, and Herbert Grönemeyer would headline the one-day event. The musicians will invade the Barclaycard Arena in Germany on July 6 to perform at the free-ticket concert series.

The concert is set to happen the day before the 2017 G20 Summit where world leaders will gather to discuss Global Goals for Sustainable Development. For those wanting to see the show, a total of 9,000 free tickets will be given out to fans who demonstrate a passion for activism. To be considered for the free tickets, potential attendees need to sign up on Global Citizen’s website, take action, and then enter the raffle to get tickets. Considerations will begin on March 14.

In addition to the music, concert-goers or “Global Citizens” will meet up prior to the event to demand that leaders attending the summit agree to address issues of education, health, development, and the refugee crisis.

“It is truly inspiring to see so many people come together and take action, participating in these essential conversations, and holding world leaders to account,” Ellie Goulding said in a press statement. “After joining the Global Citizen Festival on stage in New York last summer, I am incredibly excited to continue the journey of sustainable future free of extreme poverty by performing in Hamburg.”

This will mark the first Global Citizen Festival to take place in Europe. Watch No Doubt and Sting Perform “Message in a Bottle”

It’s been a couple of years since No Doubt have been on the stage together, but the band hit the stage last night at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City.

For their encore, the band were joined on stage by Sting to perform his song, “Message in a Bottle.”

The special performance wasn’t so much of a surprise considering that earlier in the week, it was revealed Sting would be hitting the stage with the California band, but that was all that was announced.

No Doubt and Sting were just some of the acts that performed at the third annual Global Citizen Festival. Also taking the stage were power-couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé who teamed up for Jay-Z’s “Holy Grail,”  like they did during the “On the Run” Tour with Beyoncé filling in on Justin Timberlake’s parts, and “Forever Young.”

The Roots, fun., Alicia Keys, and Tiesto also performed at the festival is sponsored by the Global Citizen movement, an initiative of the Global Poverty Project, which works to end extreme poverty by 2030.

The goal of the festival is to raise awareness and promote activism to end poverty. This year, Global Citizen is striving for commitments in vaccines, education and sanitation.
