Last month, The Strokes surprised their fans by quietly dropping a brand new EP titled, Future Present Past. The timing couldn’t be any better at the time since they were due to perform a couple of shows that weekend including their headlining gig at the Governors Ball. On Tuesday (June 28), the New York-based band surprised their fans once again by releasing the music video for “Threat of Joy”; one of the songs featured on the four-track EP (including a remix).
The video is a little kooky, much like the band. The premise of the video revolves around a guy (government official?) trying to procure the footage recorded for “OBLIVIUS.” There are some guys dressed as pigs, the band performing on a sound stage, and we think the guys were running a newspaper at some point while a femme fatale stole the film reel. “Threat of Joy” joins “OBLIVIUS” and “Drag Queen” on Future Present Past. In true Strokes fashion, there doesn’t seem to be any tour dates in support of the EP’s release. Strokes’ guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr. recently revealed in an interview that tour dates will be highly unlikely for the band.
“I don’t even know if we’re going to play any more shows…I don’t know if London might be our last show, you know what I mean? People think I’m lying but I’m just tired of trying to make some positive spin, but I’ve got no idea,” Hammond Jr. told BBC6 Music earlier this month. But then again, maybe you shouldn’t trust everything you read. After all, there were years of speculation that The Strokes was set to release new music and that didn’t pan out until mid-way through 2016.
