Anberlin Give Ft. Lauderdale Their “Last Good Night”

DSC01136

Typically when bands decide to call it a day, they just release the tired and clichéd “we are splitting up” statement, leaving a bad taste in fans’ mouth. Instead of going that route, Winter Haven’s Anberlin decided to treat fans to one last world tour before putting the band to rest, ending it all where it began; Orlando. But before that could happen, they made a quick stop in our backyard to say good-bye to their South Floridian fans.

Arriving at Revolution Live in Ft. Lauderdale, the scene would appear as if no one was interested in bidding farewell to the home state band with the front of the venue clear of anyone waiting to enter. Only a few people were present, mostly standing at the box office located next to the band’s tour bus. But the second the concert ticket was scanned and entrance was granted into the darkly dim night club, the scene would change dramatically with the club’s two floors full of eager fans ready for the bittersweet experience.

Opening the show were 68, the creation of The Chariot vocalist, Josh Scogin. The duo had recently joined the remaining days of the world tour and made sure to let the audience know who chose them for the part. “If you like us, thank you very much. If you don’t like us, then blame Anberlin,” Scogin jokingly told the audience.

During their set, they played several of their songs including one titled “Track One.” At one point, Scogin was strumming his guitar over drummer Michael McClellan, so McClellan decided to play the guitar with his drumsticks; an interesting sight to see. Scogin would then follow that up by showing his adventurous side during the short set by climbing on McClellan’s drum kit to play his guitar, though we were pretty sure he was a little drunk at that point of the night.

After their set wrapped, with a long closer, the duo walked off stage to make way for the headliners of the night and the reason that the pit area in front of the stage was filled to the brim with bodies.

Half an hour after the road crew took the stage to set up the instruments, the stage became dark as the members of Anberlin shuffled onto one of the final stages of their career. Frontman Stephen Christian was the last to get on stage, but almost as fast as he got on stage, they launched into the first song of the evening; “Paperthin Hymn” from their second album, Never Take Friendship Personal.

For the most part, the band were quiet, sticking to singing and playing, rather than bantering with the audience like many musicians tend to do at a concert, but after “Take Me (As You Found Me),” Christian had to make a comment about a crowd member in particular. “It’s one of our slowest songs and there you are fighting,” he said, directing the attention to someone in the audience.

“She was looking to slug someone. I don’t get it. We’re not Metallica. We’re more like ‘Mmmbop,’” Christian said, singing a line from the Hanson song, resulting in a round of laughter from the audience members. But the talking didn’t last much as they launched into another somewhat mellow song, “The Unwinding Cable Car.”

A song that had an odd placement in the band’s 20-song set list was “The Symphony of Blasé.” For a song that’s lyrics consist of “this is our last good night,” it seemed odd to place it in the middle of the show instead of closing with it.

The setlist did its best to give fans a little bit from every album, but when you have seven albums and 12 years worth of songs, it’s hard to give everyone what they want. The band even paid tribute to those who have been there since the beginning by playing a song from their debut album (Blueprints for the Black Market), “ReadyFuels.”

As the night progressed songs from Cities such as “Godspeed” and “A Whisper and a Clamor,” were played while “Dismantle. Repair” did a good job of dismantling fans’ emotions.

Other songs featured were: “Self-Starter,” “Someone Anyone,” “Other Side” from VITAL; “The Resistance” and “Breaking” from New Surrender; and “Never Take Friendship Personal” and “A Day Late,” from Never Take Friendship Personal among others.

Two surprises came from the Ft. Lauderdale setlist. The first was the fact that even though they had just released a new album at the beginning of the year, they only performed one song from Lowborn, “We Are the Destroyer”; not even lead single “Hearing Voices.” Another surprise came from the song they did not play, “Adelaide,” a song that was met with lots of enthusiasm at the Vans Warped Tour in West Palm Beach this past Summer.

The “last” song of the evening was the track that helped catapult them into the mainstream, “Feel Good Drag.” Once the last chord of the song came to an end, all five members of the band walked off the stage, earning them the sound of the packed venue chanting, “one more song.” Of course, when the house lights did not instantly appear, it meant “one more song” was well on its way.

The band officially closed out their set with the aptly named song, “(*Fin),” the closing track on Cities. As Christian sang about being “the patron saint of lost causes,” fans raised their crossed fingers in the air, mimicking the image on the cover of Lowborn. We like to believe it’s a promise from the band that they will be back or at least continue making music for those that have such a connection to their lyrics.

As the song ended, you could feel the aura of the venue go from excitement to sadness as the band hugged one another, took a group photograph with the crowd behind them, waved goodbye to their South Florida fans, and walked off the stage.

As the house lights came on, all that can be seen was the road crew getting ready to take apart the stage as well as the band’s backdrop which was a simple black material hanging from the rafters with “Anberlin” printed in all caps in white.

As the crowd shuffled out the doors of Revolution Live, you could feel the bittersweet aura follow everyone out into the cool night air.

This marked the end of a 12 year era.

Queens of the Stone Age Frontman Goes Off on Stage Crasher

Queens.Of.The.Stone.Age

Note to anybody who thinks that it will be a funny and cool thing to storm on stage during a Queens of the Stone Age show; don’t do it.

Someone found that out the hard way the other day when they thought it would cool to storm the stage and frontman Josh Homme was not too please with that. During their show in St. Petersburg, FL a guy crashed the stage and Homme quickly forced the guy back into the crowd.

Video of the slight altercation was taken (and can be seen below) and gave us some gems straight out of Homme’s mouth:  “Don’t do that, because I’ll fucking … I don’t care if you love me. You can stand right there, dude. I don’t know what you’re trying to do. You’re lucky I didn’t fuck you up, bro. I’m here to play for you, not jerk you off, you fucking douchebag” and much more for like two minutes.

The “begins” around the one minute and sixteen second mark.

Acoustic Basement Head Shocked at Warped Tour

warped

It’s been known to rain and pour during Warped Tour in selected cities, but yesterday afternoon, the long running music festival met unexpected weather conditions when they arrived in West Palm Beach, Florida which resulted in not only a temporary cancellation for several hours, but also the venue lost electricity.

The worst part of the day was that the man behind the recently popular Acoustic Basement as well as Therefore I Am, Brian Marquis, was injured during the torrential storm that struck the festival. It was unclear whether he had been electrocuted or if he was struck by lightning at that time.

Earlier today, Marquis released a short message where he reveals that he is fine after what occurred at yesterday’s Warped Tour stop as well as picture of him in what looks to be a hospital.

“I am alive and relatively okay. I fought a little lightning and won. Thank you for all the love and concern. I am so grateful for you all.”

After the catastrophe had happened, former The Voice contestant and current Warped Tour performer, Juliet Simms, released a tweet that started everyone’s concern about what had transpired at that moment.

Edit: We were at yesterday’s Warped Tour and had to endure almost two hours (three if you include the drive to West Palm) in the car while the storm passed. The venue was flood to the point that some audience members said that they went swimming int he water.

Warped Tour officials let fans know that if they chose to leave the show early, their tickets would be honored at today’s show in Orlando as well as signing tickets as well.

Artists Protesting Florida? Not So Fast

Justin Timberlake/Jay-Z

After the George Zimmerman/Trayvon Martin ruling two weeks back, many artist have come out of the woodwork to protest the state of Florida over a reason that no one truly knows. Whether it’s the ruling (just for those that are not familiar, Zimmerman was found not guilty) or the actual “Stand Your Ground” law, artist were rumored to be protesting the state (you read right, the state, not just that particular city).

Word got around yesterday through the Huffington Post that artists such as Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, The Rolling Stones and many more would be staying clear from Florida due to the verdict outcome. The Monday after the verdict, Stevie Wonder had come out saying that he would not be entering the state of Florida for anything as a protest. Today, it turns out, many of the representatives are coming to the defense of their performers saying that their clients had never heard of or been contacted about the list.

American Urban Radio Network’s White House correspondent April Ryan first reported the list, claiming that she had gotten the information from credible  “sources close to the Stevie Wonder camp.” The Huffington Post had said that they were at the time trying to contact the artists’ representatives even though they had posted the list. At the time, the only representative that had gotten back to them was Rihanna’s who revealed that she was not involved. MotherJones got word that The Rolling Stones had not even heard about the campaign.

When doubt started to reach an all time high, Ryan released a statement on her website where she explains that she got a ext in the middle of the night from someone who were “in support of Stevie.” Her statement could be seen below:

I obtained from multiple sources early Monday a list of artists and entertainers who my sources told me had committed to a boycott of Florida following the George Zimmerman acquittal. Since publishing that list I have heard from several representatives of the artists named who say, on behalf of their clients, they are uncomfortable being identified on that list and are seeking additional information.

Additional representatives have come out to debunk that their clients, who were on the list, were even aware that their names had been put on the list of protesters, which begs the question, if Ryan didn’t put this list together then who did?

Supposedly protests not only those mentioned above, but also

Two Members of Congress Investigating Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s Cuban Visit

Beyonce and Jay-Z in Cuba

As if Florida doesn’t already have a bad enough reputation for being horrible at counting voters’ card, now two congress member that represent the state are investigating the power duo’s recent trip to Cuba.

Two republican members, U.S. Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart, like many people want to know more information about why Jay-Z and Beyoncé chose the communistic island as their vacation spot considering that the US has a restriction against tourism in Cuba.

The only bit of information given was that the duo decided to go to the island to celebrate their fifth anniversary with their mothers, but other than that, there was no more information given. The representatives though, are searching for answers from Adam J. Szubin, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, “regarding the type of license that Beyoncé and Jay-Z received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel.”

“Cuba’s tourism industry is wholly state-controlled,” Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart wrote. “Therefore, U.S. dollars spent on Cuban tourism directly fund the machinery of oppression that brutally oppresses the Cuban people.”

The State Department have replied with saying that they had no previous knowledge of this trip. Though there are regulations set in place to keep this from happening, there are many loopholes including going to another country to gain entrance to the island.

For those who do get caught, penalties for violating the travel ban can include a 10-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. Like many people who get caught, chances of such a punishment probably won’t happen.
