Lana Del Rey goes ‘Attack of the 50 Foot Woman’ for ‘Doin’ Time’

Summer may be ending, but Lana Del Rey is not letting that happen without a new music video. On Thursday (Aug. 29), a day before her new album is set to drop, the California-loving singer unleashed the music video for her cover of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time.”

The four-and-a-half-minute clip finds Del Rey channel the 1958 film “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.” Del Rey plays the 50-foot woman who spends her time walking around Venice like it’s nothing more than a playground. We watch as she strolls around the downtown area, checks her makeup in a building, and eventually reaches the beach.

In a twist, the giant Del Rey is just part of a film that is playing at a drive-in where a blonde-wig wearing Del Rey (Lizzy Grant, is that you?) is with a date. After her partner goes missing, she goes to look for him and finds him in a car, making out with another girl.

While our blonde version of the singer just walks off, the giant version comes off of the screen to show the two-timing louse what a scumbag he is before returning to the screen.

“Doin’ Time” is featured on Del Rey’s much-anticipated sixth studio album. Norman Fucking Rockwell is due out this Friday, Aug. 30 through Interscope Records. Pre-orders are available for purchase here.

As previously revealed, Jack Antonoff, Rick Nowels, Zach Dawes, and Happy Perez are all listed as producers on the upcoming album.

In support of the new album, Del Rey will embark on a fall time tour later this year. The short North American leg of the tour begins on Sept. 21 at the Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York and concludes on Oct. 10 at the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre in San Diego.

Lana Del Rey hints that new album could be out in “two months”

And just like that, we may have finally been given an official release time frame for Lana Del Rey’s much anticipated new studio album.

On Friday (June 21), the singer took the stage at Malahide Castle outside Dublin, Ireland for a show. During her set, she reportedly told the audience that her new album would be released in two months’ time.

For fans who have been keeping a close watch, this comes as great news. Up until this point, information about Norman Fucking Rockwell has been at best scarce at best. We had a title. We were treated to six songs (“How to Disappear,” “Venice Bitch,” “Hey Blue Baby,” “I Must Be Stupid for Feeling So Happy,” “Mariners Apartment Complex,” and “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me…but I have it”). We knew that Jack Antonoff of Bleachers and fun. fame produced for the forthcoming release. All we were missing was an official release date.

While Del Rey did not further elaborate on the exact date, we can probably assume that it will be sometime in late August. Norman Fucking Rockwell will be the long-awaited the follow-up to 2017’s Lust for Life.

In addition to the release time frame reveal, Del Rey also performed her slowed down cover of Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” during the gig. Last month, she debuted her version of the 1997 track and revealed that it would be part of Sublime’s upcoming documentary “Sublime.”

“Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to at least one Sublime song,” Del Rey said about the band.

“They epitomized the SoCal vibe and made a genre and sound totally their own.”

Lana Del Rey goes California cool in her cover of Sublime’s ‘Doin’ Time’

It’s almost summertime, so we should expect Lana Del Rey to finally release her new studio album any day now. While we still don’t have an official  release date, Del Rey has given us a new summer jam to blast through our car speakers; her take on Sublime’s “Doin’ Time.”

On Friday (May 17), the New York-born singer unveiled the full cover of the 1996 reggae-infused tune. The full version of the track comes a week after she dropped a warped version of the audio on Instagram. The caption at the time read “coming soon.”

Del Rey’s version of “Doin’ Time” will appear in Sublime’s upcoming documentary “Sublime” which “outlines the history of the iconic California band.”

“Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to at least one Sublime song,” Del Rey said in a statement.

“They epitomized the SoCal vibe and made a genre and sound totally their own.”

Sublime’s Bud Gaugh adds: “We are so excited to be collaborating with Lana on this. The smoky, sexy, and iconic sound of her voice breathes new life into one of our favorite singles.”

Troy Dendekker, late singer Bradley Nowell’s widow, noted, “Lana’s cover of ‘Doin’ Time’ is magical and haunting. What an honor to have her talent complement the Sublime legacy.”

“Sublime” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April to mixed reviews from critics. Directed by Bill Guttentag and produced by Interscope Films, the film follows the group’s rise to mainstream success and their subsequent fall following the death of Nowell in 1996.

As for Del Rey, her new studio album Norman Fucking Rockwell still does not have a release date. To date, she’s released a total of six singles; “How to Disappear,” “Venice Bitch,” “Hey Blue Baby,” “I Must Be Stupid for Feeling So Happy,” “Mariners Apartment Complex,” and “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me…but I have it.”  In January, she also treated fans to a snippet of another new song titled “Happiness is a Butterfly.”
