Ladies and gentlemen, we would like to introduce you to the short list of this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Awards and some of the best of the best from across the pond were honored today when the list was revealed at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden, London.

The awards which are supposedly chosen by a panel of music critics and industry experts, revealed the 12 albums made the final cut of this year’s list.

David Bowie and his new album The Next Day, made the list as well as the Arctic Monkeys’ newest effort AM. Other nominees also include Jake Bugg with his self-titled, debut album and Foal’s with Holy Fire.

The original list for the awards included about 250 albums which dwindled down thanks to the help of those unnamed critics and experts.

The winner of the award will be announced on October 30 at the Mercury Prize Award Show due to take place at the Roundhouse.

Check out all the artists with their albums below as well as what the judges had to say about them and what it was about them that led to the decision.

David Bowie Releases Statement About ‘The Next Day’

David Bowie

The time is running out and David Bowie’s new album in a decade is about to be released. When the initial statement about the new album made headlines, questions started to surface if Bowie would do anything to help promote the new album; everything though was starting to hint at no.

A few weeks after the first single made its internet debut, Bowie’s wife, supermodel Iman, left fans grasping for a possible tour or some kind of publicity when she was interviewed for a magazine. In the magazine she said that she and the couple’s daughter wouldn’t be able to go out on tour with him due to the daughter’s schooling. That was the statement heard around the world because the questions began to resurface about his return to the public spectrum.

The Rumpus‘ Rick Moody had asked the singer to give him a “work flow diagram” for his new album in an interview and this is what Bowie gave him:

“Effigies

Indulgences

Anarchist

Violence

Chthonic

Intimidation

Vampyric

Pantheon

Succubus

Hostage

Transference

Identity

Mauer

Interface

Flitting

Isolation

Revenge

Osmosis

Crusade

Tyrant

Domination

Indifference

Miasma

Pressgang

Displaced

Flight

Resettlement

Funereal

Glide

Trace

Balkan

Burial

Reverse

Manipulate

Traitor

Urban

Comeuppance

Tragic

Nerve

Mystification”

From there on, Moody takes the 42 words and goes into a full-fledged breakdown about the album. The full 12,000 word analysis can be read here.

But no matter what, the main question remains, is the singer just holding back onto the last possible minute just reveal that he will be heading back into the limelight, or will he just let the album speak for itself?

David Bowie to Head Out on Tour?

David Bowie

David Bowie’s 2013 is already looking like a good year for the musician. First he releases a new single on his birthday in January. Then he premieres a music video featuring actress Tilda Swilton to already excited fans and to top it all off, he lets iTunes stream his entire new album, The Next Day for free.

Now, Bowie’s wife, super hot, super model, Iman may have let the cat out of the bag by saying that the family will not be able to join the singer on tour while speaking to Grazia magazine recently.

She was quoted as saying, “We have a 12 year old in school, so we are stuck, we can’t travel. Our schedule is around her, so I don’t know. We’ll have to go visit him, but we won’t be on tour with him because she’s in school” speaking about the duo’s 12-year-old daughter, Alexandria who attends school in New York.

This statement comes on the heels of Bowie’s guitarist, Gerry Leonard, saying that there’s a “50-50 chance” that the singer will ever tour again. But while Leonard says that there might be a chance that a tour is in the future, the singer’s producer, Tony Visconti, ruled out any possibility that the singer would do any live performance to help promote the new album.

Now this begs the question, with all the talk about a possible tour, will Ziggy Stardust himself hit the road again?

David Bowie Streaming New Album

David Bowie

David Bowie really knows how to keep fans listening even after his ten-year break from the music world. His new album, The Next Day is set to be released on March 12, but iTunes is currently streaming the full new album. This shouldn’t come off as a surprise that he would have a new album coming out relatively soon. On January 8, his 66th birthday, the singer revealed on his website the name of his new album as well as that it would include 14 new tracks and 3 bonus tracks.

As a gift for the fans, the first song from the album, “Where Are We Know?” was officially released as an audio video. Earlier this week, Bowie released his second new song from the album, “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” which featured actress Tilda Swinton.

To give a full and free listen to The Next Day, you can head on over to iTunes and enjoy the new tracks.
