CHVRCHES share their ‘Death Stranding’ contribution

Sold out shows. Music festival appearances. Hit songs.

What hasn’t CHVRCHES done? Well, now they can add video games to their lengthy list of accomplishments.

On Tuesday (Oct. 1), the Scottish band was revealed as one of several artists contributing songs to the forthcoming soundtrack for Playstation’s latest video game, “Death Stranding.”

“We were really excited about the opportunity to work with Kojima because we have been fans of his work for a long time,” the band writes about their collaboration.

“He has always been such a visionary in the gaming world, and we were honoured to be involved in the project. The concept of ‘Death Stranding’ is so unique and really felt to us like it was challenging people to care about the world they create—in the game and otherwise. We wrote this song specifically for ‘Death Stranding,’ thinking of the themes of the game and what it is trying to say to people.”

Listen to “Death Stranding” above.

In addition to CHVRCHES, the eight-song album includes an impressive list of other acts such as Bring Me the Horizon, Khalid, Major Lazer, the Neighborhood, and more.

Death Stranding: Timefall is due out Nov. 7 through RCA / Sony Interactive Entertainment while the game launches on Nov. 8.

Now, you may be wondering to yourself, “what exactly is the premise of this game?”

According to creator Hideo Kojima, “Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. It is created so that all elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of the ‘Strand’ or connection.”

Interesting concept, don’t cha think?

CHVRCHES and Marshmello join forces for ‘Here with Me’

Fresh off his success with Bastille on “Happier,” it looks like Marshmello is ready to join forces with another rock band for another collaboration. On Friday (March 8), the masked DJ and Scottish trio CHVRCHES came together for a brand new tune. Titled “Here with Me,” the new track sounds like it could easily find a home on either act’s discography.

The barely-three-minute song mixes frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s unmistakable vocals with Marshmello’s typical electronic sound. In addition to the new tune, the collaborators released the lyric video for the song which features animated versions of both CHVRCHES and Marshmello as the lyrics play across the screen. Watch the lyric video for “Here with Me” above.

“Here with Me” is currently available for purchase here.

The joint track comes almost a year after CHVRCHES released their third studio album, Love is Dead. Months after the album’s release, the band decided to share a surprise EP titled Hansa Session with their fans. The EP featured redone versions of five songs which were featured on Love is Dead.

The collection of tunes was recorded at Berlin’s famed Hansa studio which inspired the five-track album’s name. Legendary musicians such as Depeche Mode, U2, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie all recorded at that studio.

As for Marshmello, the DJ released his sophomore album in June 2018. Titled Joytime II, the album was not exactly well-received by critics. No matter the criticism, the DJ announced shortly after that he was working on its follow-up, Joytime III.

CHVRCHES to release surprise EP on Friday

CHVRCHES released their third studio album earlier this year, but now it looks like the trio wasn’t quite done. On Tuesday (Nov. 13), the Scottish band announced plans to release a surprise EP at the end of the week. Titled Hansa Session, the digital version of the collection is due out this Friday, Nov. 16.

The surprise release will include five new versions of songs from their recently released record, Love is Dead.

In addition to the newly redone songs, the band also announced plans to release Hansa Session on a limited edition, 10-inch vinyl on Dec. 9. Pre-orders are available here.

The collection of tunes was recorded at Berlin’s famed Hansa studio. CHVRCHES join a lengthy list of  legendary musicians who have recorded at the studio including Depeche Mode, U2, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie who completed his trilogy of albums there.

“When we had the opportunity to record at Hansa we jumped at it even though we were in the middle of a hectic tour,” guitarist Iain Cook said in a press statement.

He continues: “It is such hallowed ground for me — my heroes Bowie, Depeche, Iggy, Siouxsie, Tangerine Dream, Nick Cave amongst others made arguably their best work in that building — and we hoped that when we went there, we would capture even just a tiny bit of that energy.”

“It was really fun to try to reinterpret the songs and still communicate the messages and emotions with different arrangements,” frontwoman Lauren Mayberry said about re-imagining the previously released songs.

The complete song list for the upcoming EP can be seen below.

Watch: CHVRCHES explore young love and adventure in ‘Graffiti’

Months after releasing their much-anticipated third studio album, CHVRCHES have returned with a brand new music video for another track off the recently released record. On Tuesday (Oct. 9), the Scottish band unleashed the clip for their latest single, “Graffiti.” The almost-four-minute video follows two teenagers as they hang out and go on adventures in a one-day span.

The viewer watches as the pair ride a bike on deserted road, relax by a tree in a forest, listen to music and eat pizza in one of their houses, and chill (and float) inside of a creepily dark farmhouse. If you had any expectations of seeing any of the members of the band in the clip, then you may be let down. The complete music video centers around the two protagonists and their one-day adventure. Watch the complete music video for “Graffiti” above.

“Graffiti” is featured on CHVRCHES recently released record, Love is Dead. “Graffiti” joins previously released singles “Get Out,” “My Enemy,” “Never Say Die,” and “Miracle” on the group’s third studio effort.

Love is Dead was released in late May via Virgin EMI. Though it was met with mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, the album reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard‘s Top Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums chart. Love is Dead peaked right outside the Billboard 200 chart’s top ten, earning the No. 11 spot during the week of June 9, 2018.

Currently, the trio are in the midst of wrapping up their North American tour in support of Love is Dead. Tonight (Oct. 10), the three-piece will hit the stage at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. The list of remaining tour dates can be found here.

Watch CHVRCHES navigate a dystrophic nightmare in ‘Miracle’

Earlier this month, CHVRCHES premiered another new song from their much-anticipated third studio album, Love is Dead. On Wednesday (April 25), the Scottish trio decided to gift fans the official music video for the record’s latest single, “Miracle.” The barely three-and-a-half-minute clip finds frontwoman Lauren Mayberry in the middle of what appears to be a cross between a gang war and a dystrophic nightmare.

The clip, which was shot in one take, follows Mayberry as she tries to avoid getting involved in all the bloodshed and fighting, but no matter what she does, she still winds up getting sucked into the fighting.

The music video was directed by Warren Fu who previously worked with the group on their “Clearest Blue” video.

“We’re all huge fans of Warren’s work and were so excited when he agreed to be the creative director on this record,” says Mayberry. “We met him when he directed the video for our song ‘Clearest Blue,’ and it’s so cool to see the world you imagined come to life through his work.”

“Miracle” will join previously released tracks “Get Out,” “My Enemy,” and “Never Say Die” on CHVRCHES impending new album. Love is Dead will be released on May 25 through the band’s longtime home of Glassnote Records.

In support of the new set of tunes, the band announced earlier this week plans to hit the road during the summer and fall months. The complete list of upcoming tour dates can be found here.

Listen: CHVRCHES ‘Get Out’ on new tune

Earlier this week, CHVRCHES announced to fans that they would be unveiling a brand new song before the end of the week. On Wednesday (Jan. 31), the Scottish band kept their promise by releasing the music video for their brand new track “Get Out.” The almost four-minute clip features nine different surveillance-like screens projecting different images that, at first, have absolutely no connection.

The images playing on the bigger screen include video of an intersection (location unknown), someone digging a rather deep hole, the inside of what looks like a recording studio, and creepily, the inside of a bathroom. As the video goes on, it appears that the only thing tying all nine scenes together is a logo of a heart with an X drawn right through it.

Watch the music video for “Get Out” above.

“Get Out” will reportedly be featured on the group’s upcoming third studio album, though no confirmation about the new record has been given.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, CHVRCHES frontwoman Lauren Mayberry revealed that the group’s third studio album will include some of the band’s most poppy, most aggressive, and most vulnerable songs so far.

“When I listen to the record, I feel like it’s the most pop stuff we’ve done and also the most aggressive and vulnerable at the same time,” Mayberry explains to the publication. “It was about really leaning into those moments—and also wanting there to be a real humanity and character to what we’re saying.”

The impending record was produced by both CHVRCHES and Greg Kurstin.

Th yet-to-be-titled record will be the follow-up to the group’s 2015 release, Every Open Eye. The record, the band’s sophomore effort, made quite a splash in 2015, landing on a slew of music publications’ “Best Albums of 2015” lists. Every Open Eye also went on to land at the number eight spot on the Billboard 200 chart as well as earn the top spot on both the “U.S. Top Alternative Albums” chart and the “U.S. Top Rock Albums” chart.

Governors Ball 2016 Lineup Unveiled

The Governors Ball just revealed the complete lineup for the 2016 incarnation of the annual event. On Friday morning (Jan. 8),the New York-based music festival unveiled the complete lineup for the three-day festival. Upon looking at the lineup, it would appear that two Governors Ball veteran performers will be returning to Randall’s Island in June.

The first veteran performer confirmed was Kanye West. The rapper’s last appearance at the festival was three years ago. West’s top-line billing comes hot on the heels of him releasing two new songs, “Real Friends” and “No More Parties” on Friday. The two new tracks will apparently be part of his G.O.O.D Fridays campaign which he recently relaunched.

Much like the rapper, New York’s own The Strokes will also return to the Governors Ball stage this year. The band have reportedly been working on a new album, the follow-up to 2013’s lukewarm-received album, Comedown Machine. The Strokes last played Gov Ball two years.

In a crazy, or maybe a major PR stunt, Beck will also headline the event. As most of us remember from last year’s Grammy’s, West’s encounter with Beck was not exactly a love affair, even if the rapper did apologize for his stunt. We assume all the backlash he received help that apology come materialize. Hopefully, the stunt will remain in 2015, like many other things.

Also slated to make the journey to New York that weekend will be The Killers, who are in the early stages of writing new material; M83, who will return after a two-year performance hiatus; Death Cab for Cutie; CHVRCHES; Big Grams (Big Boi and Phantogram); De La Soul; Against Me!; and many more. The official poster with all the artists can be seen below.
