Driver Involved in 2014 SXSW Crash Sentenced

More than a year-and-a-half after what happened on the morning of March  13, 2014 at Austin’s South by Southwest Festival, the driver who caused so much pain and hurt has been sentenced. On Friday (Nov. 6), the man on trial, Rashad Owens, learned his fate after a Travis County jury deliberate for three hours. Not surprising, the jury found him guilty of capital murder that resulted in four people losing their lives and 25 others suffering from injuries.

Since the state decided to forgo the death penalty, according to KXAN, Owens was sentenced to automatic life in prison with no chance of parole. The conviction means that Owens can spend anywhere from five to 99 years in prison.

For those not familiar with what happened that fateful morning during the annual festival in downtown Austin, police reportedly noticed a man had pulled into a near-by gas station in a silver Honda in an effort to evade an officer that was working a D.U.I. checkpoint. As it turned out, during the trial, Owens was not only under the influence (.114, over the .08 legal limit), but the silver 2012 Honda Civic that was involved was stolen.

Owens then proceeded to drive the vehicle in the wrong direction on a one-way street, resulting in him going through a previously set up barricade and into a crowd of people. At the time, there was a large gathering of people outside The Mohawk where rapper Tyler, the Creator was slated to perform.

Since the crash, several lawsuits have been filed both in federal and Texas state court. As of last December, a total of seven lawsuits were filed against the festival’s private companies (SXSW Holdings INC. and SXSW LLC), the traffic consulting firm (Traffic Design Consultants, LLC), and the person who headed the project, Patrick Lowe.

Listen to the First 2014 Pop Music Mashup

In less than two weeks, we say good-bye to the year that was 2014 and to think, it feels like it was just yesterday that we were bringing in the new year with so much hope.

Band reunions, anniversary tours, new albums, random music news, and much more have kept us busily writing for you guys (old and new followers) and we would like to thank you for taking a couple of seconds of your day to read a post, like it and even reblog it if you have this year.

As the year comes to an end, we are surely going to begin to see many mash-ups of the year’s most infectiously catchy (and most often than not, annoying) songs of the year.

DJ Daniel Kim who puts out his yearly “Pop Danthology” out around this time is at it again with his mash-up of 66 of the biggest songs of the year.

Check out his 2014 year in review which features songs such as Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass,” Pharrell’s “Happy,” Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off,” Maroon 5’s “Animals,” and many more clocking in at over six minutes.

Watch Chris Walla’s Final Song with Death Cab for Cutie

dcfc

Death Cab for Cutie announced last month that they will be down a member after longtime guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Chris Walla, announced his departure from the group.

During this past weekend, the band played Rifflandia 2014, which Walla revealed would be his last show as a member of the band in a blog post he uploaded announcing his leave.

Video of the performance was of course shot and features the band closing out the set with their song, “Marching Bands of Manhattan” from 2005’s Plans, marking the end of Walla’s time with the group.

Watch the emotional video below and tell us you did not get a little teary-eyed.

When Walla announced his departure from Death Cab for Cutie after 17 years, he made sure to let fans know that it had nothing to do with inner band turmoil or any of those dramatic claims. Instead, he revealed his plans were “simply to continue making music, producing records, and erring on the side of benevolence and beauty whenever possible.”

Walla’s departure now leaves a vacancy with the band who just finished recording their yet-to-be-titled eight studio album. With the album release date being sometime in 2015 and a possibly of a lot of touring in support of it, we might soon be finding out who will be taking Walla’s spot.

Artists Come Together to Celebrate Nirvana

DaveGrohlKristNovoselic

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have finally been admitted to the museum and how else do you celebrate the honor than to host a big ceremony and then follow it up with an invite-only, intimate show?

That is exactly what went on last night. The remaining members of Nirvana -Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear- reunited at St. Vitus in Brooklyn, New York for an intimate set of Nirvana songs. Though Kurt Cobain left big shoes to fill, Joan Jett, St. Vincent, Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon all did their best to fill the role, even for one song.

Jett sang “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” St. Vincent performed “Lithium,” Gordon also sat in throughout the jam session while surprise guest Lorde took on “All Apologies.”

As for the ceremony, R.E.M. frontman, Michael Stipe was chosen to honor the band and that he did when he proclaimed that they “tapped into a voice that was yearning to be heard.” It also helped that Stipe was the godfather to Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s daughter, Frances Bean.

Watch all the videos from the show here:

LORDE, “ALL APOLOGIES”:

JOAN JETT, “SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT”:

ST. VINCENT, “HEART SHAPED BOX”:

Also included in this year’s induction class were  Peter Gabriel, Cat Stevens, KISS, The E Street Band and many, many more.
