Halsey is not afraid of calling out all the inequalities facing women, and her new song is an ode to that. On Friday (May 17), the New Jersey-born singer unleashed her brand new song, “Nightmare.”
The lyrics find Halsey airing out her frustrations about what it’s like to be a female, especially now with all the disgusting political drama surrounding who gets a say when it comes to a woman’s body (spoiler, it’s the woman). The lyrics include a direct reference to that when she talks about how men think they can dictate how a woman uses her body as well as the constant remarks of “you’ll look prettier if you smile” when a woman doesn’t owe them anything (remember all the men whining when Brie Larson didn’t smile on the “Captain Marvel” poster?).
The four-minute music video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis while the concept came from the mind of Halsey. The video stars Cara Delevingne, Suki Waterhouse, Blondie head-honcho Debbie Harry, and of course Halsey.
“Imagine getting onstage every night and seeing young women sweating mascara tears, lightning in their eyes, throwing elbows and raising fists, screaming till the veins in their necks raise under warm skin, and not being inspired by it,” the singer wrote on Twitter about the new song.
“This song is about you, for you.”

There’s no word yet on whether “Nightmare” will be a one-off single or part of Halsey’s upcoming studio album. Halsey’s last studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, was released in 2017.
