It looks like Modest Mouse is ready to give fans some new tunes. On Thursday (March 21), the Washington-founded band announced plans to release a brand new song at the end of the month. Titled “Poison the Well,” the new single is due out digitally on March 29.
The confirmation comes a week or so after fans began to receive cryptic puzzle pieces in the mail. Thanks to social media, those who did not receive puzzles in the mail were able to see what the band had up their sleeve.
As per images uploaded onto social media, the puzzles came in a drawstring bag with directions that read “Assemble my insides to reveal the advertisement.” Another message accompanied the bundle which read, “‘Poison the Well’ will arrive 3.29.”
This isn’t the first time the band mailed out cryptic messages to announce major news. In 2014, they pulled a similar stunt when they announced the release of their sixth studio album, Strangers to Ourselves. The group mailed test pressings of the album’s lead single, “Lampshades on Fire,” as well as a note announcing the name of the single, the name of the album, and the record’s release date.
“Poison the Well” is the band’s first new song in four years. Modest Mouse’s last studio effort was 2015’s Strangers to Ourselves.
In addition to “Poison the Well,” the act also revealed that they will be taking part in this year’s Record Store Day. Their contribution to the annual music lover’s holiday will include a triangular mint-green 7-inch record which will feature “Poison the Well” on the A-side of the record and a previously unreleased track on the B-side.
Record Store Day will take place on April 13.
Modest Mouse made headlines earlier this month when they were announced as the special guest on the Black Keys’ “Let’s Rock” fall tour.
The upcoming excursion begins on Sept. 21 at the Life is Beautiful music festival in Las Vegas and concludes two months later on Nov. 24 at the Pepsi Live at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
Shannon and the Clams, Repeat Repeat, and Jessy Wilson will open on select dates.
