Watch: Fitz and the Tantrums get dancey in ‘123456’ music video

Spring has barely started, and it already looks like Fitz and the Tantrums are giving us a new song to blast during those dog days of summer. On Wednesday (March 20), the California-founded band released their first new song in almost three years. Titled “123456,” the latest track finds the group sticking to what they do best; catchy, carefree tunes that make you want to get up, dance, and forget about everything around you.

Unlike many of their other songs that just scream “party time,” this new track is a lot deeper in context than its catchy beats and dance-centric music video.

“‘123456’ has a fun and carefree vibe, but it’s actually quite an emotional song personally,” explains Fitz and the Tantrums frontman Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick.

“Before writing the song, I was questioning my talent, fighting off insecurities, and trying to find a way to keep going.  The music to ‘123456’ literally pulled me out of a funk and hyped me up. And so the lyric goes: ‘hyped up ready to go, I got my eyes on the prize, I’m sick of feeling the lows I wanna roll with the highs.’ It was the turning point of the record for me, capturing the moment when optimism, hope, and confidence were found after a dark period as an artist trying to write for this album.”

“123456” is the first single off the band’s much-anticipated fourth studio album. Though the album has yet to be given a name or a release date, fans can assume that it will see a spring/summer 2019 release date.

In support of the yet-to-be-titled record, Fitz and the Tantrums previously announced plans to embark on a massive summer tour with Young the Giant. The cross-country trek begins on June 12 at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado and concludes two months later on Aug. 16 at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center in Las Vegas.

COIN and Alice Merton will open for the bands during the excursion. COIN will play the role of supporting act during the June and July shows while Alice Merton will play the role of supporting act during the August shows.
