According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film will take place during Depression-era London while the premise of the film revolves around Mary’s return after a tragedy strikes the Banks family, leaving the family, including Micheal’s three children, numb and joyless.
While this direct sequel to the original 1964 film does not star everyone’s favorite icon Julie Andrews, the treasured nanny will now be portrayed by Emily Blunt. Joining Blunt in the forthcoming film will be Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda who plays the role of Jack, a lamplighter who has been compared to Bert.
The all-star cast also includes: Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks; Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks; Angela Lansbury as a balloon vendor; Colin Firth as banker William Weatherall Wilkins; Meryl Streep as Mary’s cousin Topsy; Julie Walters as Ellen the housekeeper; and Dick Van Dyke will play the role Mr. Dawes Jr, the retired chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.
Mary Poppins Returns is due out Dec. 19.
