Watch: SOFI TUKKER share music video for ‘Baby I’m a Queen’

SOFI TUKKER’s infectious single “Best Friend” has found its place on several music charts since its debut and it looks like the duo have no plans of stopping any time soon. On Monday (March 19), the New York-based act released the music video for their latest single, “Baby I’m a Queen.” The over-three-and-a-half-minute clip begins with the duo – Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern – sitting on the judges’ panel of a beauty pageant.

The viewer watches as little girls prance across the stage, dance, and even shoot arrows in an attempt to win the top prize. At one point, the viewer watches as one of the girls messes up and her stage mom can be seen yelling at her from the crowd. In a moment of clarity, which the viewer can see etched on Hawley-Weld’s face, the little girl goes running to the back. While she sits there, defeated, a little boy appears to give her a bouquet of flowers. Like Hawley-Weld, she has a moment of clarity and begins to take off all the makeup and fake eyelashes. She is soon joined by the other contestants who can be seen saying goodbye to being made up to look like dolls and hello to being normal kids.

“Just because you are vulnerable, doesn’t mean you have to let yourself be belittled or infantilized (why is “baby” the default nickname?),” the group writes in a press release about the song.

“We are strong and empowered because we cry, because we desire, and because of what is chaotic about us. This song is about standing up as strong and powerful, because of that courage to share ourselves. It’s about being both a baby and a queen at the same time.”

The music video was filmed in Miami and directed by Phillip Lopez whose resume includes videos for Selena Gomez, Pussy Riot, Cold War Kids, Avicii, and Rita Ora. Watch the new music video above.

“Baby I’m a Queen” will join the act’s breakout single, “Best Friend,” on their debut album Treehouse. Treehouse is set to be released on April 13. Pre-orders for the album can be found here.

In support of Treehouse, the duo will hit the road for their Treehouse world tour which will kick off on April 18 at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. The complete list of tour dates can be found here.
