Last Monday, Green Day made headlines when frontman Billie Joe Armstrong posted on Twitter that the group was going to release a new song soon. Almost two weeks later, the California punks have debuted their brand new single. On Thursday (Aug. 11), the trio released their brand new song (their first in four years) “BANG BANG.”
In addition to the new song, the group also announced the release of their twelfth studio album. The new record will be titled Revolution Radio, confirming some speculation from fans. Revolution Radio is set to be released on Oct. 7 through Reprise Records. Unlike many of their previous record, the trio decided to self-produce the record like they did with 2000’s Warning. For now, check out the lyric video for “BANG BANG” below.
In conjunction with the release of “BANG BANG” and the new record announcement, Armstrong sat down with Rolling Stone to discuss the new album, the inspiration behind the album’s lead track, and everything that has happened since their “break” began.
As per Armstrong, “BANG BANG” is told from the perspective of a mass shooter. “It’s about the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media,” Armstrong begins to explain to the publication. “There’s this sort of rage happening, but it’s also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted to get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get that out of my brain because it just freaked me out.”
But that’s not all the record will be tackling. Now that the political season is in high-gear, Armstrong also admits that some of that leaked into the album’s writing. “I can only go from my own personal life, but this is the most chaos I’ve ever seen in an election. It’s just so freaky. I don’t want to add more of the outrage or anger. I’d just try to reflect it.” To read Armstrong’s full interview, head on over here.
Pre-orders for Revolution Radio are currently available on Green Day’s website while the complete track list and album art for the album can be seen below. Revolution Radio will be Green Day’s first album since 2012’s trilogy, ‘Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! While not a full album, the band did release a Christmas tune titled “Xmas Time of Year” last December.
