Green Day tease new music

It’s been a few years since Green Day released any new music, but now, it sounds like things are about to change. On Monday (Aug. 1), frontman Billie Joe Armstrong took to Twitter to unveil that the group will be releasing a new song soon. “Dear friends! Green Day is putting out a new single called “BANG BANG” August 11. Stay tuned for more details.” Along with the new song announcement, Armstrong also posted a new, black-and-white image of the band (as seen above).

The new song news comes over a year after it was first revealed that the group was working on some new tunes. During an interview in April of 2015, frequent collaborator and longtime producer Rob Cavallo revealed that Armstrong had written a total of five songs at that point. “Let me tell you, they were just fantastic. He is absolutely at the top of his game. Fans can be sure that when they do return, the music will be amazing,” Cavallo was quoted as saying. No other details were given, especially if the new song would be the first single off of an impending new album.

The “BANG BANG” announcement comes a year after the California punks made headlines. Last October, the band released their rock documentary, Heart Like a Hand Grenade. The documentary followed the trio for nine months as they recorded an album that would eventually become 2004’s hit record (and Broadway show), American Idiot. Besides all the behind-the-scenes clips of the group working on the new album, the film also included an intimate, never-before-seen concert the band thew.

Green Day’s last musical release was 2012’s trilogy, ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tré!, though some might argue that last December’s surprise Christmas single, “Xmas Time of Year,” would count.
