While we are a music blog and like to post happy things like our favorite bands’ upcoming tour or new music, there is something in the music industry that seems to always be present even though many don’t like to talk about it; sexually explicit abuse towards women and misogynistic threats.
Back in 2013, CHVRCHES frontwoman, Lauren Mayberry wrote an op-ed piece for The Guardian where she proclaimed she would not “accept online misogyny,” something that she admits she expected since her band’s success came because of the internet.
Turns out, not everyone received the memo that threatening to rape a woman is not only not cool, but also offensive, disrespectful, and all-around disgusting.
Yesterday, the singer posted an image of one of the many threats of sexual assault that had been sent her way. Instead of “letting it slide,” she called out the troll on her Instagram.
“These people never learn that violence against women is unacceptable. But they also never learn that women will not be shamed and silenced and made to disappear,” she writes on her personal account.
She also fights back by telling those trolls that she isn’t “going anywhere” and to “bring it on, motherfucker. Let’s see who blinks first.”
Mayberry’s response to the trolls mirrored the sentiments in her op-ed piece.
“What I do not accept, however, is that it is all right for people to make comments ranging from ‘a bit sexist but generally harmless’ to openly sexually aggressive,” she wrote.
“Is the casual objectification of women so commonplace that we should all just suck it up, roll over and accept defeat? I hope not.”
And that she definitely did not.

My band is lucky enough to have some of the most awesome, supportive and respectful fans in the world and we are so excited to be in the studio making an album to share with them. Yet, on a daily basis, we still receive communications like this. These people never learn that violence against women is unacceptable. But they also never learn that women will not be shamed and silenced and made to disappear. I am not going anywhere. So bring it on, motherfuckers. Let's see who blinks first.
