When news hit that Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley had been admitted to the hospital, the frontman was the first to reveal that the cause of his long-term hospitalization for kidney and liver failure was due to his many years of alcohol abuse.
It has now been over two months since his life-altering news had been uncovered and now, in a recent interview, Whibley revealed that he has gotten help from two unlikely people; Iggy Pop and Tommy Lee.
Pop and Lee have been known for their boozing history and seem like the most unlikely people to help someone from the cusp of death to recovery, but with their history, that might be why they reached out to him.
“Now I’m sober, I don’t get calls from certain people that I used to…the drinking friends” Whibley began in an interview with Kerrang!
“Now, I’m the bum-out to them. Who wants to invite the sober guy to the party? Y’know who has been incredibly supportive? Iggy Pop. He had a lot of great advice; he’s been through it all. We’ve been friends for years.”
Doctors had told Whibley that if he were to take one more shot of alcohol, it would cost him his life. The road to recovery began for the “Fat Lip” singer after he had been drinking at home and collapsed. His fiancée found him and rushed him to the hospital. That’s when the news was broken to him and where his long-term stay in the hospital began.
One silver lining for Whibley was that his ordeal had inspired him to write new music. He told fans to keep an eye out for that.
