Following the news that Velvet Underground frontman and rock icon, Lou Reed had passed away this past weekend, the music world was deeply shocked and sad.
Since the word spread, musicians had come together to pay tribute to the icon including the Arctic Monkeys who played Reed’s 1972 song, “Walk on the Wild Side” during their show last night in Liverpool where they are as part of their tour for their fifth studio album, AM. The video of the band performing the song can be seen below.
The Arctic Monkeys join a long list of performers covering Reed’s songs including My Morning Jacket, Phish and Pearl Jam while John Cale, David Bowie, Morrissey and Henry Rollins all spoke out about what the singer meant to them and how he influenced their musical careers. Yesterday, David Byrne, Patti Smith and Metric’s Emily Haines all wrote exclusive remembrances about Reed for Rolling Stone.
Reed, sadly passed away this past Sunday at his home in Southampton, New York. His cause of death was not immediately reported, but the Associated Press had reported that it was due to a “liver-related ailment.” One of the doctors that had treated Reed during his liver transplant earlier this year in Ohio had said that the singer had reached the point that there was nothing else that could be done for him. Instead of staying in Ohio, he requested to go back home where he sadly passed away.
