Slayer Guitarist Dies of Liver Failure

Today marks a sad day for the world of metal.

Slayer guitarist and founding member of the iconic band, Jeff Hanneman passed away at the age of 49 due to liver failure. On their website, the band posted the following message to fans about the passing of Hanneman:

“Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Hanneman’s death comes after a long ordeal that was brought on by a spider bite. Yesterday, the band posted on their site a little bit of information about Hanneman’s situation:

“It’s been about a year since he got out of the hospital, and since then, he had to learn to walk again, he’s had several painful skin grafts, he’s been in rehab doing exercises to regain the strength in his arm,” the statement said.

The letter also revealed that even though Hanneman was looking forward to rejoining the band soon, he had also told them that “he need [ed] to take more time to continue his rehab.”
